October 11 and 13, 2006 Observation

October 11, 2006

Today the students received their first essays back. I went through all the essays to look at the comments that Anna made. Most of the comments were questions for students to consider when revising. The comments focused on the thesis and flow of the paper, connections and transitions. There were a few grammar issues marked, subject/verb agreements and commas, though this was not the focus.  All the comments dealt with the issues that class discussions focused on. There was only one A between both of Anna’s classes, some A –‘s in the first class, B+ was the highest grade in the 2nd class.

The focus of today’s class was peer review. Each student had to review 2 different student papers.

Class started with discussion of the class revision policy and then went into a lesson on visual rhetoric. The students were given an example of an essay and had three pictures that they needed to place in the essay to make the argument stronger or convey the right meaning.

In the second class Anna had me finish grading proposals. I had a scale from 1 to 10 to work with and focused mainly on their thesis and commented on their supporting points. I asked a lot of questions and tried to steer them in the right direction with their thesis. I graded about 8 1-2 page proposals in the class period and felt confident about the comments I made.
